What is The Carder Method?
The Carder Method is Mark Carder's new approach to teaching oil painting. The method is presented in a two-DVD set totaling six hours of how-to-paint-in-oil instruction. It covers everything you need to know to create a realistic oil painting. Mark takes the mystery out of oil painting by leaving nothing out, assuming you know nothing about how to paint.

Will I always need to use the Color Checker and Proportional Divider to aid me when I paint?
No, the Color Checker and Proportional Divider are tools that teach you to see and paint like a trained artist. Think of these tools as training wheels that will teach you to see color and proportion accurately. You will rely less on these tools as you master the technique.
If I'm already an artist, will The Carder Method help me improve?
Yes. The direct and unconventional approach of The Carder Method is unique. Trained artists have used The Carder Method to deepen their understanding of color, proportion and the fundamentals of painting.
Can I work from photographs using The Carder Method?
Although The Carder Method teaches you to work from life, the same principles apply when working from a photograph. The reason The Carder Method teaches you to work from life is because very few photographs contain the natural colors that we see in the world around us. Therefore, Mark Carder believes it is important to mix colors from life before attempting to paint from a photograph. But, yes, The Carder Method can be used to paint from a photograph.
How much does The Carder Method cost?
The 6 hour DVD set costs $129. You may also wish to purchase a Color Checker for $14.95 and a Proportional Divider for $29.95, the two companion tools that are used in The Carder Method. In addition you will need to purchase oil paints, brushes and other studio supplies if you don't already have them. A supply list is included with the DVD.
How much time is required to learn to paint?
Some will work more quickly than others, but at a minimum, about 8 hours per week is needed. Painting can be done in a series of short 30 to 45 minute sessions, or longer depending on personal preference. The total time it will take to finish your first painting is dependent on the size and complexity of the painting, but a simple still life will take on average about 3 to 4 weeks to finish. As you gain experience you will work faster.
How much space do I need to set up my studio?
About 10 feet x 10 feet is recommended, although it is possible to work with less space.
How much natural ability is required to paint using The Carder Method?
None. This is what makes The Carder Method unique. The Color Checker and the Proportional Divider will guide you as you mix colors, draw and paint.
